Kirstie
Kirstie is a passionate Early Childhood Intervention Lead.
We sat down with her to learn about the importance of therapy in the early years and Ability WA’s new early childhood intervention career pathway for our therapists.

My daughter, Avery, was born at 34 weeks, weighing only 1300 grams after surviving an intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) during pregnancy. She spent the first four weeks of her life in NICU before coming home.
After settling in at home, and several visits to our Child Health Nurse (CHN) and GP, she was referred to a Paediatrician. At four months old, Avery was not babbling, rolling, sitting or placing any pressure on her legs and was diagnosed with severe developmental delay.
After her diagnosis, we were referred to the IBIS program. The team at IBIS conducted an initial assessment for Avery and provided us access to a range of therapists who would visit our home every three weeks.
During this time, I was also facing serious health concerns so having the service come to us, in an environment Avery was comfortable in, was a life changer. The exercises were tailored for our home and customised so they would work with items we already had.
Without funding from Telethon, the IBIS program would not exist. At a time when both my daughter and I were experiencing health issues and money was tight, the opportunity for free care for Avery during this formative time meant one less stress we had to consider.
I’m so proud of the progress Avery has made so far, she is now walking and talking.
